N. Michael McKinnell
N. Michael McKinnell, FAIA, ARIBA, is the co-founder and design director of the Boston firm of Kallmann McKinnell & Wood Architects, which he formed in 1962 with fellow architect Gerhard Kallmann when they won the competition for the design of Boston City Hall. Mr. McKinnell's projects have also included Boston’s Hynes Convention Center, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences headquarters, and the Independence Visitor Center in Philadelphia, as well as embassies, courthouses, libraries, and university buildings. Mr. Kallmann is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, which has awarded Kallmann McKinnell & Wood with eight honor awards and the 1984 AIA Firm of the Year award.
Mr. McKinnell graduated from the University of Manchester, England, and Columbia University in New York. He has been a teacher as well as an architect, serving on the faculty of Harvard University's Graduate School of Design for 25 years and as the Professor of the Practice of Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Mr. McKinnell has lectured and taught at many other universities, and in 1989 he was the Architect in Residence at the American Academy in Rome.
