Dear Ms. Wright:
In its meeting of 15 November, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed and approved a final submission for an outdoor sculpture titled Thanks from the Saved Ones by artist Mark di Suvero at the main entrance of the U.S. Coast Guard headquarters building on the St. Elizabeths West Campus. The Commission members commended the General Services Administration for selecting an artist of such eminence for this project.
In their discussion of the proposal, the Commission members commented that the sculptor's use of stainless steel will create a lively engagement with varying conditions of light for this installation. They expressed support for the idea that the sculpture would rotate on a pivot; they recommended further study of the wind conditions to understand this effect. In addition, they recommended further development of the water basin which serves as a setting for the piece, noting that the design should anticipate its appearance if empty.
The Commission is pleased to support the Art in Architecture program of the General Services Administration and, as always, the staff is available to assist you with the next submission.
