Dear Mr. Peterson:

In its meeting of 20 March, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed alternative designs for the three coins in the United States Marshals Service 225th Anniversary Commemorative Coin Program. The Commission members present provided the following recommendations:

Five−dollar gold coin. The Commission members supported the reported recommendation of the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) for obverse #2 and reverse #9.

One−dollar silver coin. The Commission members recommended obverse #5, with the request to condense the letter spacing of "Liberty" to improve the legibility and increase the separation of the word from the design elements at the bottom of the composition. They recommended reverse #3 with the modification suggested by the Mint staff to eliminate the horizontal fence rail, retaining only the vertical post for the leaning figure, in order to improve the clarity of the composition.

Half−dollar clad coin. The Commission members recommended obverse #2 with the suggestion to move the horse inward from the left edge of the composition, which may address the compositional balance issue that was identified by the CCAC. They recommended reverse #9 and supported the CCAC suggestion to eliminate the handcuffs from the design.

As there was not a quorum for the review of the submission, these recommendations will be placed on the administrative agenda for confirmation at the Commission's meeting of 17 April. As always, the staff is available to assist you with future submissions.
