Letter

Dear Mr. Peterson:

In its meeting of 16 February, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed new reverse design alternatives for two of the four quarters to be issued in 2013 as part of the America the Beautiful series of circulating quarters. The Commission members expressed appreciation for the submission made in response to their review of the previous designs for these two coins and provided the following recommendations.

Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial (Ohio). The Commission members recommended reverse alternative #3 due to the simplicity and elegance of its composition, focused on the memorial column as the primary iconic element of the park; they commented that the depiction of details and multiple elements at unrelated scales in the other alternatives is not successful.

Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine (Maryland). The Commission members did not recommend any of the submitted alternatives, reiterating their request for a plan view of the fort which they said may be the most suitable depiction for a coin design and would succinctly convey the fort's iconic five–sided shape.

The Commission requests the submission of additional alternatives for the Fort McHenry coin. As always, the staff is available to assist you.

Sincerely,

/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
