Letter

Dear Ms. Mendelson-Ielmini:

The Commission of Fine Arts would like to express its appreciation for the information presentation at its 16 October meeting concerning plans for the extension of the Potomac Park levee system across 17th Street. The Commission members commented that this project offers an exciting design opportunity while addressing the critical exigency of flood protection. They suggested that the alternative proposals be developed with an emphasis on the simple and straightforward expression of the infrastructure’s purpose while also responding to the sensitive design context within the landscape of the National Mall.

The Commission recognizes the difficult timetable and complex coordination required for this project and looks forward to reviewing the submission when available. As always, the staff is available to assist you.

Sincerely,

Thomas E. Luebke, AIA
