Dear Mr. Hanlon:

In its meeting of 21 March, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed and approved the final design submission for the temporary gateway pavilion along Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, SE, at the St. Elizabeths East Campus. The Commission members expressed appreciation for the District of Columbia government's responsiveness to their previous comments and its commitment to this transformative project.

The Commission members commented on the improved development of the landscape as a public space and the informative elaboration of the possible configurations of the rooftop amphitheater. Among the alternatives presented to refine the pavilion's relationship to the significant visual axis of Redwood Drive, they supported the alternative that proposed moving the pavilion's north end approximately seven feet further south. As the construction documents are completed, they recommended careful attention to the materials and detailing of such elements as the fabric ceiling and the visually slender columns.

The Commission looks forward to the installation of this model project to begin the revitalization of the St. Elizabeths East Campus. As always, the staff is available to assist you in the completion of this project.

Sincerely,

/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
