Letter

Dear Ms. DiBari:

In its meeting of 20 November, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed and approved the concept design for exterior decorative lighting at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce at 1615 H Street, NW, based on a site inspection of the lighting mockup the previous evening.

The Commission supported the proposal to light the panels between the columns on the H Street and Connecticut Avenue facades and recommended concept approval for the lighting scheme, as shown in the drawings and materials received and dated 7 November 2008 and as adjusted in the site mockup. Specifically, the Commission expressed a preference for the warmer, less green light represented by the fixture on the left; for the softer light obtained by partially masking the diffuser with an opaque filter; and for the raking light on the front of the columns obtained by locating the fixture approximately 35 inches from the face of the building, as shown in the mockup.

The Commission appreciates the applicant's efforts in preparing for the two site inspections, which were essential in reviewing the proposal. The Commission delegated final review to the staff which, as always, is available to assist you.

Sincerely,

Thomas E. Luebke, AIA
