No objection to issuance of permit for proposed sign scheme for "Roosters" including two woven fabric awnings mounted within the masonry opening of the tall show windows at the rear, a sign composed of individually pin-mounted back-lit letters no taller than 12 inches high with logo at rear, and back-lit sign of letters no taller than 12 inches high pin-mounted onto metal backer panel at pedestrian portal on Wisconsin Avenue as shown in supplemental drawings dated 30 May 2013 which indicate sign at portal will align with 8-feet wide opening and power source hidden from view within the structure. Note: Any subsequent modifications to the approved design made during DCRA Technical Review must be resubmitted to the Commission for approval prior to issuance of the permit.

No objection to concept design for alterations to southeast corner of 3222 M Street building complex per supplemental drawings dated 28 May 2013. Recommend no window at first floor of east wall and rectilinear door opening above, straight stair to correspond with stone wall heights, 12-inch signs, equal-size sliding windows as indicated, and removal of existing exposed electric conduits from facade. File new submission at DCRA of construction drawings, including architectural details, dimensions, sign details and cut-sheets for replacement windows with permit application for review by the Commission.

The Commission regrets that signs and awnings were installed prior to review. No objection to issuance of permit for proposed sign scheme composed of back-lit letters reading "JoS A. Bank", awnings within masonry openings with lettering on valance over center show window only, one plaque, and vinyl letters applied to glass as shown in supplemental drawings dated 11 June 2013 which indicate letters no taller than 16 inches high pin-mounted on wall above entry doors. Attachment must be made through mortar joints only. The internally-illuminated letters and the blade sign are not compatible to the character of the historic district, were not approved and must be removed no later than 31 October 2013.

No objection to issuance of permit for proposed alterations including wall mounted signs composed of 12 inch high pin-mounted letters reading '7-Eleven', repair of storefronts, transoms and windows with replacement glass where needed, removal of planters and rooftop mechanical equipment as shown in supplemental drawings dated 17 June 2013 which indicate equipment will be located at rear of building where it will not be visible from public thoroughfare, 1/1 windows at 1340 Wisconsin Avenue, and retention/ repair of double doors at corner. Blade sign and privacy film applied to the glass were not approved and were deleted from this permit application. Note: Any subsequent modifications to the approved design made during DCRA Technical Review must be resubmitted to the Commission for approval prior to issuance of the permit.

No objection to issuance of permit for proposed alterations to storefront and back-lit sign composed of pin-mounted 12-inches high letters reading 'Dr. Martens' with a halo effect as shown in supplemental drawings dated 12 June 2013 which indicate recessed central door and sidelight and two storefront bay windows with wood base no taller than 2 feet high. Face of letters on sign must not be illuminated. Note: Any subsequent modifications to the approved design made during DCRA Technical Review must be resubmitted to the Commission for approval prior to issuance of the permit.

No objection to concept design for alterations to entrance vestibule as shown in supplemental drawings dated 9 May 2013, provided plaster ceiling with recessed down-lights is implemented and door/transom heights are consistent.

No objection to issuance of permit for proposed alterations to basement stairs, removal of decorative metal on windows on front facade, all-wood replacement windows at rear only, alterations to rear, wood trellis and site work on rear yard, solar panels and rooftop mechanical equipment located where they will not be visible from public thoroughfare, as shown in supplemental drawings dated 12 June 2013 which indicate stairs to basement relocated by only one riser. Replacement of front windows, outdoor fireplace at rear and aluminum-clad replacement windows were not approved and were deleted from this permit application. Facade will have paint removed, and will be repainted if condition of brick is not even. Note: Any subsequent modifications to the approved design made during DCRA Technical Review must be resubmitted to the Commission for approval prior to issuance of the permit.

No objection to issuance of permit for new pair of doors, transoms, and sidelights at window located immediately to the north of Thomas Jefferson Street vestibule per supplemental drawings dated 16 May 2013. Note: Any subsequent modifications to the exterior design made during DCRA technical review must be re-submitted to the Commission for approval prior to issuance of permit.

No objection to concept design for proposed addition, alterations, and shutters to significantly altered 1882 residence as shown in supplemental drawings dated 22 May 2013, provided garage door does not include glass lights and it incorporates a simple vertical panel system. File new submission at DCRA with details, dimensions and cut-sheets for replacement windows with permit application for review by the Commission.

No objection to concept design for proposed alterations to enclosed porch, garage at rear and replacement windows as shown in supplemental drawings dated 28 May and 6 June 2013. No objection to panel shutters. File new submission at DCRA of construction drawings, including architectural details and dimensions, window details and cut-sheets, with permit application for review by the Commission.

Recommend against concept design for proposed freestanding ATM machine in public space near the corner of Wisconsin Avenue and Dumbarton Street, NW per drawings dated 17 May 2013 as it represents unprecedented construction in public space within the historic district.

No objection to issuance of permit for two new doors at existing entrance per drawings dated 17 May 2013. Note: Any subsequent modifications to the exterior design made during DCRA technical review must be re-submitted to the Commission for approval prior to issuance of permit.

No objection to issuance of permit for new slate rear patio and 6-foot tall brick garden walls, including fountain and spot lighting, provided the patio is laid on a pervious surface, directional lighting is pointed downward, and the wall footings span the root system of the adjacent large Walnut tree per supplemental drawings dated 12 June 2013. No objection to issuance of permit for proposed door surround, menu box, painted garage door, rooftop equipment and sign scheme for 'Gypsy Sally's' provided only one goose neck light fixture over sign is used, letters of painted sign on 34th St facade are reduced to no taller than 12 inches high, and sign on north facade facing the C & O Canal and towpath is deleted as shown in supplemental drawings dated 11 June 2013. No objection to issuance of permit for three new red fabric awnings without side panels, projecting 3-feet, and with a 1-foot-tall valance with central awning including 'TJ Maxx Home Goods' lettering per drawings dated 30 May 2013.

No objection to issuance of permit for proposed replacement of basement windows on bay with custom made single-glazed all-wood window replicas to match details, profile and dimensions of existing windows and sized to fit masonry opening. No objection to issuance of permit for proposed alterations to stabilize rear brick wall, compromised by recently collapsed ell, with toothed in new brick per supplemental drawings dated 12 June 2013. Alterations to the front facade or to the slate roof were deleted from this permit application. File new submission at DCRA for repair of slate roof with permit application for review by the Commission as soon as possible to minimize damage to building. The Commission regrets that the alterations to garage doors, the new light fixtures and cameras with exposed electric conduits were completed prior to review or contrary to the previous recommendations for 'Malmaison'. No objection to issuance of permit for garage doors as installed. Exposed conduits on facades must be removed, light fixtures must be mounted flush with wall (eliminate box), and east camera must be incorporated into canopy over entrance door as shown in supplemental drawings dated 18 June 2013. Corrections to work as-built must be completed no later than 30 September 2013. Recommend against issuance of permit for new areaway and basement egress window at front facade of semi-detached residence as shown in drawings dated 17 May 2013. A window well in this location will not be compatible with the character of the front facade of historic building.

The Commission regrets that gas line was mounted to facade of historic frame structure prior to review. Recommend against issuance of permit for exposed gas line on facade which is not appropriate to or compatible with the character of the historic building and district. Recommend gas line be placed in crawl space or eliminating gas line.

No objection to issuance of permit for proposed replacement door for entrance to second floor retail space and for blade sign no larger than 24 inches by 36 inches reading 'Lovely' mounted to right of door. Recommend existing original door be retained in site for future replacement.
