Proposal for replacement of windows at Hyde Elementary School was not approved. Applicant elected to pursue a complete window restoration.

No objection to issuance of permit for proposed hipped roof supported by metal brackets over entry door as shown in supplemental drawings dated 14 July 2010. Previously proposed addition of enclosed vestibule was not approved and was deleted from this permit application. Note: Any subsequent modifications to the exterior design made during DCRA technical review must be re-submitted to the Commission for approval prior to issuance of permit.

The Commission regrets that the replacement vinyl windows were installed prior to review or permit. Recommend AGAINST issuance of permit for existing replacement vinyl windows which are not appropriate to the historic building or the historic district. Recommend 6/6 wood windows matching the historic pattern and details be used. File new submission of permit application with details for wood replacement windows no later than 14 October 2010 deadline for review by the Old Georgetown Board at the 4 November 2010 meeting.

The Commission regrets that original iron stairs were removed and replaced with metal stoop prior to review or permit. No objection to issuance of permit for proposed replacement of stoop with salvaged and new iron stairs as shown in Option A of supplemental drawing dated 5 July 2010 which indicate detailing of stairs to match detailing of original stairs. Corrective work must be completed no later than 31 December 2010. Note: Any subsequent modifications to the exterior design made during DCRA technical review must be re-submitted to the Commission for approval prior to issuance of permit.

No objection to issuance of permit for proposed metal stairs and addition of storefront at second floor level as shown in supplemental drawings dated 23 July 2010 which conform to approved concept design. Existing planters, mechanical equipment and other obstructions to passageway must be removed as part of the scope of work prior to construction of new stairs. See previous approval for relocation of equipment to roof top of elevator tower with louvered screen under case OG 08-323. Note: Any subsequent modifications to the exterior design made during DCRA technical review must be re-submitted to the Commission for approval prior to issuance of permit.

No objection to issuance of permit for proposed alterations, including sign of 9-inch-high letters reading 'Fino Restaurant' and new folding wood windows as shown in supplemental drawings dated 16 July 2010 which indicate LED light strips replacing spot lights that are to be removed. Proposed flag poles were not approved and were deleted from this permit application. Note: Any subsequent modifications to the exterior design made during DCRA technical review must be re-submitted to the Commission for approval prior to issuance of permit.

No objection to issuance of permit for proposed replacement sign with lettering for Jefferson Court no taller than 7 1/2 inches high and for projecting sign for Colonial Parking as shown in supplemental drawings dated 17 June 2010 which indicate only letters (not the face of the signs) are illuminated. Note: Any subsequent modifications to the exterior design made during DCRA technical review must be re-submitted to the Commission for approval prior to issuance of permit.

No objection to issuance of permit for proposed sign scheme, including back-lit letters no taller than 24 inches high reading 'UGG' pin-mounted above second floor windows as shown in supplemental drawings dated 17 June 2010 PROVIDED attachment is made through mortar joints only and that existing light fixtures and exposed electric conduit on roof of storefront are removed as part of this project. No alterations to the storefront are part of this permit application. No objection to the installation of temporary oxygen tank behind a security fence for the duration of the construction. No objection to concept design for alterations to rear provided location of new window openings are adjusted towards the center to retain more masonry at corners. Recommend windows on frame portion of building, which were replaced prior to review or permit, are replaced with wood replicas of original window profile and details. Recommend further study of condition of original wood windows on brick portion of building for retention of as much original fabric as possible. File new submission of working drawings, including dimensions, details and cut-sheets, with permit application for review by the Commission.
