No objection to general concept design for proposed alterations to storefront as shown in Option A of supplemental drawings received and dated 21 October 2005. Recommend further simplification of design by eliminating steel beam and study of door location. File new submission of working drawings, including dimensions, details and material samples, with permit application for review by the Commission when ready.

No objection to issuance of permit for rear addition of screened porch at first floor level to replace existing structure as shown in supplemental drawings received and dated 16 November 2005 which indicate traditional detailing will be used on cedar wood railing and steps. Planter on Poplar Lane is to be installed as previously approved. Note is made that permit application is pending final zoning review. Any modifications to the approved design as a result of further review in the permit process must be submitted to the Commission for approval. The Commission regrets that work was initiated prior to review and without a permit.

No objection to issuance of permit for proposed alterations to areaway and new stairs to the basement entrance and for one-story bay addition on side of rear wing to match detailing of existing bay as shown in supplemental drawings received and dated 23 November 2005. A one-story addition to cover the stairs was NOT approved and has been deleted from this permit application. Any modifications to the approved design as a result of further review in the permit process must be submitted to the Commission for approval.

No objection to general concept design for proposed alterations to roof to provide usable third floor behind new mansard roof and for proposed alterations to front and rear facades PROVIDED design of dormers, entry door portico and rear facade is further simplified and that excavation of front areaway for new basement entrance is limited to existing window well. File new submission of working drawings, including details, dimensions and material samples, with permit application for review by the Commission when ready.

No objection to issuance of permit for proposed revisions to approved design to introduce a trellis behind metal fence PROVIDED trellis is constructed with spacing of 10-inch to 12-inch on center as shown in supplemental drawings received and dated 16 November 2005. Additional reviewed work will be completed as previously approved. See previous Recommendation (OG 02-048). Note is made that permit application is pending final zoning review. Any modifications to the approved design as a result of further review in the permit process must be submitted to the Commission for approval.

Recommend AGAINST issuance of permit for alterations to areaway for basement entrance, including widening of steps and replacement of retaining wall and railing, which, as proposed, are not appropriate at this location. Submitted materials are insufficient for permit review. Applicant failed to attend the meetings where this project was discussed. Recommend further study of reconstruction of areaway wall in its present location, without projecting above sidewalk level except for a curb to match existing stone curb, and retaining existing steps and historic railing. File new submission of working drawings, including details and dimensions for wall, with permit and public space permit applications for review by the Commission when ready.

No objection to issuance of permit for proposed mechanical equipment on roof PROVIDED it is installed in such a way that it will not be visible from M Street and that existing mechanical equipment on top of bay window facing Potomac Street, which was installed without review or permit, is removed no later than 28 February 2006. Note is made that lettering on valance of awning is excessive, and installed without review or permit, and it should be limited to one sign over the entry door and one on the Potomac Street side with such modification completed no later than 28 February 2006.

Recommend AGAINST issuance of permit for existing replacement windows which are inappropriate for this row of buildings. Recommend further study of new replacement windows that match original 6/12 configuration with exterior muntins as shown in adjoining residence, with the use of half screens. Commission regrets that work was completed prior to review and without a permit. A new submission of detailed drawings with permit application for a proposal of appropriate window replacements must be submitted for review no later than 28 February 2006.

No objection to issuance of permit for proposed additions of gym and classrooms wings, partial demolition of gym and alterations to the Hardy Middle School and its site including terraces, stairs, parking lot, track field and landscaping. Submitted materials conform to approved final design reviewed by the Commission during its meeting of 16 October 2003. Erect a material samples panel (including replacement window) on site facing south for review by the Old Georgetown Board prior to ordering materials.

Recommend AGAINST concept design for alterations to three storefronts to be combined into one continuous glass storefront which will be inappropriate to the architectural style of the approved design for the three buildings under construction. Although the design for each storefront may be revised, the buildings must remain as three distinct storefronts, considering that the Commission recommended the center building be painted while the two end structures be kept as natural exposed brick. File new submission of concept design for revisions to storefronts for review by the Commission when ready.

No objection to issuance of permit for proposed removal of west wall, which is failing, and its replacement with a CMU block wall to be parged or stuccoed PROVIDED existing brick wall is retained to a length of 12-inches to 16-inches on front and back corners. Re-submit revisions for review by the Commission if exploratory demolition reveals necessary changes to the approved work.

No objection to issuance of permit for proposed ADA modifications to campus, including alterations to sidewalks, handicapped access ramps on paved surfaces, stripes on parking lot and directional signs which are to be kept to the minimum number of signs required. Note is made that permit application is pending final zoning review. Any modifications to the approved design as a result of further review in the permit process must be submitted to the Commission for approval.

No objection to issuance of permit for proposed repair of wood windows and alterations to existing original stained glass to introduce plate glass in the outer panes, retaining the green panes in the center. Recommend installation of samples of both smooth and textured glass prior to final selection of glass panes. Working drawings conform to approved concept. See previous Recommendation (OG 05-168).

No objection to issuance of permit for proposed revision to previously approved sign including non-illuminated aluminum letters no taller than 12-inch high reading 'The Levi's Store' relocated closer to the face of the building, relocation of 5-inch high vinyl letters to transom and painted Levi's tab on vestibule as shown in supplemental drawings received and dated 2 November 2005. Note is made that permit application is pending final zoning review. Any modifications to the approved design as a result of further review in the permit process must be submitted to the Commission for approval.

No objection to issuance of permit for proposed installation of picket fence no taller than 36-inches high along West property line on front yard to match existing picket fence as shown in supplemental drawings received and dated 25 October 2005. New fence must be painted. Note is made that permit application is pending final zoning review. Any modifications to the approved design as a result of further review in the permit process must be submitted to the Commission for approval.
