Columbia Orbiter

Dear Mr. Metzler:

On 17 September, the Commission approved the proposal for a memorial to the crew of the Columbia Orbiter. Although the bronze plaque on the memorial recreates the crew photograph, we recommend the removal of the mission logo from the casting because it detracts from the faces of the astronauts. Also, the helmets should be rendered with additional detailing rather than a highly-polished finished. This will help to minimize their prominence. These changes will emphasize the crew, individually and collectively, creating a respectful memorial.

If you have future questions, the staff is available to assist you.

Sincerely,

/s/ David M. Childs, FAIA
