Letter

Dear Mr. Moy:

In its meeting of 18 November, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed the revised submission of alternative designs for two of the First Spouse coins and medals to be issued in 2011. The Commission appreciated the consideration of its previous comments and the opportunity to review the revised submission. The specific recommendations were as follows:

Eliza Johnson. The Commission recommended alternative #2 for the reverse, supporting the composition of children in the background with Mrs. Johnson depicted in profile in the foreground, and suggested that the crowded character of the design be resolved by deemphasizing Mrs. Johnson's chair and providing more space between her and the children. The Commission also recommended obverse alternative #2, consistent with its action on the previous submission.

Lucy Hayes. The Commission recommended reverse alternative #3, commenting on the relative simplicity of this design and the animated depiction of Mrs. Hayes. The Commission also recommended obverse alternative #2, consistent with its action on the previous submission, and noted the success of the near-profile pose for the portrait.

As always, the staff is available to assist you with the next submission.

Sincerely,

/s/Thomas E. Luebke, AIA
