Letter
Dear Ms. Gibson:
In its public meeting of 16 November conducted by videoconference, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed alternative reverse designs for the 2025 issue of the Native American One Dollar Coin series. The Commission was pleased to take into consideration the preferences and comments of the Mint’s numerous liaisons for this coin, and provided the following comments and recommendations.
To honor Mary Kawena Pukui, a Native Hawaiian scholar, author, composer, dancer, and educator, the Commission members recommended alternative #01B, consistent with the family’s preferences. They commented that the inclusion of Ms. Pukui’s shoulders helps to strengthen the portrait, and they cited their preference for the kukui nut lei instead of a kukui fruit.
As always, the staff is available to assist you with future submissions.
Sincerely,
/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
