Letter

Dear Mr. Peterson:

In its meeting of 18 April, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed the revised submission of alternative reverse designs for the coin and medal honoring Edith Wilson in the First Spouse series.

The Commission members expressed appreciation for the consideration of their previous comments and the opportunity to review the revised submission. They concluded that the new designs would be unsatisfactory and therefore recommended alternative #1, a previously submitted design, with several modifications: eliminating the door in the background to simplify the composition; adjusting the pose to place Mrs. Wilson's hand on President Wilson's shoulder to clarify their relationship; and enlarging the paper being signed to convey that it is an official document rather than a checkbook. The Commission reaffirmed its previous support for alternative #3 for the obverse.

As always, the staff is available to assist you with future submissions.

Sincerely,

/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
