Dear Mr. O'Dowd:
In the meeting of 27 July, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed the proposed additions and renovations, including a new third story and five exterior decks, to a single-family residence located at 8240 West Beach Terrace, NW. While the Commission stated no objection to the addition of a third floor, the massing and height of the proposal should be simplified and reduced to be more compatible with the surrounding context. The number of decks should be reduced, and the amount of glazing on the side of the house facing the park should be minimized to reduce the impact of the structure on the park.
Please consult with the staff as you refine this project; when ready, please submit the project directly to the Commission for review. If you have questions regarding the project, the staff is available to assist you.
