Dear Ms. McNally:

In its public meeting of 18 September conducted by videoconference, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed candidate designs for a Congressional Gold Medal honoring Forgotten Heroes of the Holocaust. Consistent with the preference of the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee, the Commission recommended Pair #9 for the obverse and reverse, providing the following comments for the refinement of these designs.

The Commission members found that the recommended pair, which depicts the action of an individual stamping a passport on the obverse and a symbolic oak tree on the reverse, would be a powerful combination. For the obverse, they recommended refining the font and spacing of the inscription “Act of Congress” to be more consistent with the other inscriptions on the coin. For the reverse, they found the Hebrew lettering difficult to read against the tree trunk, and they recommended improving its legibility by moving it elsewhere in the composition or adjusting its fill and outline. They also recommended changing the word “Whosoever” to “Whoever,” which they said is more common and would be easier to read.

As always, the staff is available to assist you with future submissions.

Sincerely,
/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
