Letter

Dear Mr. McCullough:

In its meeting of 15 November, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed the concept design for the Pierce Still House, a historic structure that is part of the most significant grouping of early-nineteenth-century agrarian buildings in the Rock Creek valley.

The Commission members made no objection to the general concept for the removal of the existing garage and new additions. The members commented that the proposed second-story addition to the 1924 porch may alter the legibility of the original historic stone structure and its character. As the design and details are developed, careful study of the additions should be made to ensure that the configuration of the new roofs is appropriate and that the quality and scale of the new building elements are comparable to that of the historic structure.

The Commission delegated final approval to the staff and encouraged the applicant to consult with them as the project continues.

Sincerely,

/s/Thomas E. Luebke, AIA
