Letter

Dear Ms. Mendelson-Ielmini:

During its meeting of 15 September, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed and approved the concept design for the Victims of Communism Memorial to be located in NPS Reservation #77B at the intersection of Massachusetts and Maryland Avenues, NW. The Commission members commented that the proposed bronze sculpture, based on the 1989 "Goddess of Democracy" statue erected in Tianenman Square, was an appropriate symbol for this memorial. Given the simplicity and the development of the memorial concept design, the Commission members delegated the final approval to the staff provided that there are no major changes.

The Commission looks forward to seeing this commemorative memorial completed. Please submit the construction drawings for final review by the staff when ready. As always, the staff is available to assist you if needed.

Sincerely,

/s/Thomas Luebke, AIA
