Letter

Dear Mr. Anderson:

In its public meeting of 16 April conducted by videoconference, the Commission of Fine Arts approved, based on its prior review of the submission materials, the revised concept design for a new multi-story building and associated landscape for the St. Elizabeths Single Men’s Shelter, to be located on the historic East Campus of St. Elizabeths Hospital at 2700 Martin Luther King, Jr., Avenue, SE.

For the development of the project, the Commission members recommended modifying the landscape design to include an irregularly spaced line of shade trees along the south side of the entry walkway, with the trees less than thirty feet apart,
in order to increase shade and improve the spatial definition of the entrance sequence along the meadow. They also recommended reversing the color palette of the gray brick building and its red brick stair towers to be more consistent with the historic context of the St. Elizabeths East Campus.

The Commission looks forward to review of the final design for the project. As always, the staff is available to assist you with the next submission.

Sincerely,

/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
