Letter

Dear Mr. Myers:

In its public meeting of 16 November conducted by videoconference, the Commission of Fine Arts approved the proposal for the Endangered Animals Art Project, curated by the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, to install ten sculptures depicting locally extinct animals on lampposts along Connecticut Avenue, NW, near the National Zoo.

The Commission members expressed support for the project, commenting that the outdoor sculptures would be delightful, particularly to children. In their discussion, they expressed concern about the long-term viability of the artworks, questioning both the durability of some of the proposed materials and the scale of the larger works that would project within public space, and they therefore encouraged the D.C. Government to maintain the installed artworks to ensure they remain in good condition.

The Commission looks forward to review of future public art proposals. As always, the staff is available to assist you.

Sincerely,
/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
