Dear Ms. Gibson:

In its public meeting of 16 November conducted by videoconference, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed alternative designs for a Congressional Gold Medal honoring the Army Ranger veterans of World War II. The Commission provided the following comments and recommendations.

Consistent with the preferences of the Mint’s liaison for this medal, the Commission members recommended obverse alternative #04 and reverse alternative #07A as the best compositions. They observed that both of these designs include the names of battle sites in the peripheral text; while this provides a sense of unity for the two sides of the medal, the duplication of “Salerno” should be eliminated. Noting their general preference not to include punctuation in the formal text on coins and medals, they suggested removal of the exclamation point in “Rangers Lead the Way!” unless it is an integral part of the Rangers motto.

As always, the staff is available to assist you with future submissions.

Sincerely,
/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
