Dear Mr. Deatrick:
In the last meeting of 16 February, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed the final design for the proposed Starburst Intersection plaza at H and 15th Streets, Maryland and Florida Avenues, and Bladensburg and Benning Roads, NE. While the project will greatly improve the existing conditions of the intersection, they commented that the landscape design should be simplified to be more complementary of the approved mural. In addition, the proposed lighting embedded in the pavement should be eliminated as it detracts from the artwork and may be difficult to maintain.
The Commission requests that the applicant work with staff to create a more comprehensive presentation prior to returning for final review. Your future submission should include more accurate renderings of the proposed design, material samples, and visual examples of proposed landscape and streetscape elements. As always, the Commission staff is available should you require further guidance.
