Dear Mr. Wiedefeld:

In its meeting of 16 June, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed a concept submission by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) for the installation of digital advertising and information signs at Metrorail stations. The Commission approved the submission with the following comments.

The Commission members supported WMATA’s intention to offer additional and timely information with the proposed new digital screens, but they expressed concern that the detailing and finishes of the new pylons and cabinetry be carefully considered to ensure durability and aesthetic compatibility with the existing character of the Metro system. Understanding that this proposal replaces traditional static signs, they recommended continued emphasis on customer experience and orientation, including consideration of how the system would function in the event of mechanical failure.

The Commission expressed appreciation to WMATA for its ongoing work in developing high-quality designs for its stations and looks forward to the review of the next submission, which should include the construction details for the new signs. As always, the staff is available to assist you.

Sincerely,

/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
