Dear Ms. Gibson:

In its public meeting of 18 April conducted by videoconference, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed alternative designs for a three-coin set commemorating the U.S. Marine Corps on the 250th anniversary of its establishment. The Commission provided the following comments and recommendations.

Consistent with the preferences of the Mint’s liaison organization and of the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee, the Commission members supported the selection of alternative S-R-05 as the common reverse design for all three coins. For future submissions of multi-coin sets, they encouraged the Mint generally to consider a shared reverse to provide design unity.

For the obverse of the five-dollar gold coin, the Commission members recommended alternative G-O-09. For the obverse of the one-dollar silver coin, they recommended alternative C-O-03, which was initially submitted as a design for the clad coin. For the half-dollar clad coin, they recommended alternative S- O-05B, which was initially submitted as a design for the silver coin; expressing appreciation for the simplicity of this composition, they requested adjusting this design to eliminate the overlap of the gun scope with the text “USMC.”

The Commission noted that the large number of presented alternatives can be an obstacle to detailed consideration of their design merits. As always, the staff is available to assist you with future submissions.

Sincerely,
