Dear Mr. Jeppson:

In its meeting of 19 March, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed alternative designs for a Congressional Gold Medal recognizing the "Monuments Men" of the U.S. armed forces during and following World War II. The Commission's recommendations were as follows.

For the obverse, the Commission members recommended the composition of artwork and soldiers in alternative #7, describing it as a more legible design than the similar theme of alternative #6 that was preferred by the Mint's Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee. For the reverse, they recommended using obverse alternative #12 due to its straightforward text describing the subject of the medal. They supported appropriate adjustment of the text for this pairing, including elimination of the repetition of the phrase "Monuments Men" and inclusion of the phrase "Act of Congress 2014."

As always, the staff is available to assist you with future submissions.

Sincerely,
