Letter

Dear Mr. Vogel:

In its meeting of 19 November, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed a site selection study for the proposed Gold Star Mothers National Monument. The Commission approved Site D, the alternative that would locate the monument on National Park Service property immediately west of the Arlington National Cemetery visitor center. In their support for this location, the Commission members understood that the proposed monument would be of modest size and would include landscape improvements to enhance the immediate setting as well as the tree-lined character of Memorial Drive.

The Commission members expressed appreciation for the concise and thorough presentation, and the well-considered selection criteria used to analyze the alternative sites for the monument. As always, the staff is available to assist you with the development of a design.

Sincerely,

/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
