Letter

Dear Mr. Weaver:

In its meeting of 19 November, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed a revised concept design for the new Marvin Gaye Recreation Center, to be located at 6201 Banks Place, NE. The Commission approved the submission with the following comments.

The Commission members expressed appreciation for the inventive design that has resulted from careful analysis of the site conditions. In their discussion of the relationship of the project to the adjacent stream, they encouraged continued coordination with the regulatory agencies that address the complexities of construction within a flood-prone area. They also suggested simplifying the building’s massing by eliminating the southeastern projecting volume on the first floor in order to clarify the primary design gesture of a single large volume floating above a base.

The Commission looks forward to the next review of this project. As always, the staff is available to assist you.

Sincerely,

/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
