Dear Mr. Hanlon:
In its meeting of 20 November, the Commission of Fine Arts, based on its prior review of the submission materials, approved the concept design for the modernization of and additions to the Lafayette Elementary School located at 5715 Broad Branch Road, NW, and delegated review of the final design to the staff.
The Commission members complimented the quality and thoroughness of the concept submission, commenting that the project is exemplary as a contemporary addition to a historic building. As the project is developed, they recommended further study of the scale of the amphitheater at the intersection of Broad Branch Road and Northampton Street as it mediates between the architecture and the landscape.
The Commission anticipates the successful completion of this project and encourages the design team to continue to consult with the Commission staff in preparation of the submission of the final design for delegated review.
