Letter

Dear Mr. Vogel:

In its meeting of 23 January, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed and approved the final design submission for a replacement visitor screening facility at the base of the Washington Monument.

The Commission members expressed appreciation for the careful attention to detail throughout the review process and for the refinement of the design in the final submission. They emphasized that the nighttime appearance of the glass pavilion is an important design consideration, and they supported the inclusion of supplemental rooftop lighting to mitigate the pavilion’s impact on the lighting of the monument itself. They also approved the associated field of geothermal wells to the west of the monument.

The Commission looks forward to completion of this project to replace the existing temporary screening pavilion. As always, the staff is available to assist you with future submissions.

Sincerely,

/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
