Recommendation

No objection to the issuance of a permit for the installation of new lighting, awnings, and retail tenant signs within the lower courtyard levels of the Watergate retail complex, as shown in materials received and dated 5 July 2013 and supplemental materials received and dated 17 July 2013, pending the receipt of supplemental materials. Recommend AGAINST the issuance of a permit for the installation of a sign band, a monument sign, and blade signs on the Virginia Avenue and New Hampshire Avenue sides of the Watergate buildings, as shown in materials received and dated 5 July 2013. Recommend that the applicant consult with CFA and DC Historic Preservation Office staff regarding the design of signs in these locations. Staff notes with regret that the modifications to the lower plaza paving were constructed without submission for CFA review, finding the high contrast and graphic character of the installed paving pattern inappropriate within the setting of the Watergate complex. Refer to DC Historic Preservation Office. Note: Any subsequent modifications to the approved design, including those made during DCRA technical review, must be resubmitted to the Commission for approval.
