Letter

Dear Mr. Kenner:

In its meeting of 15 September, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed a final design for the 7th Street Pier, part of The Wharf redevelopment project on Maine Avenue, SW, along the Washington Channel. The Commission members present recommended approval of the submission with the following comments.

The Commission members commended the design of the pier for its beautiful sculptural form, and noted that the shade structure at the wharf end of the pier had been much improved in its character and design. They recommended that the exact location of the concession kiosk be carefully studied to maximize shade for human comfort. They also recommended that the sculptural element of the fire feature be more freely and irregularly shaped, and that its stone surround be a more pronounced ovoid shape to respond to the geometry of the pier.

As a quorum was not present for the review of the submission, this recommendation will be placed on the administrative agenda for confirmation at the Commission's meeting of 20 October. As always, the staff is available to assist you with future submissions.

Sincerely,

/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
