In its public meeting of 16 February conducted by videoconference, the Commission of Fine Arts approved, based on its prior review of the submission materials, the final design for Phase 1 of the renovations of and additions to the Smithsonian Institution Building (the Castle) and its associated landscape; the scope comprises the belowgrade elements of the project including multi-level excavation beneath the Castle.
The Commission expressed appreciation for the thorough and responsive work of the project team and looks forward to reviewing the next phase of the project, which will include details of the proposed above-grade construction. Please coordinate the next submission with the staff which, as always, is available to assist you.
