Dear Mr. Jeppson:

In its meeting of 17 November, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed alternative designs for a medal honoring the service of Jacob J. Lew as Secretary of the Treasury.

Consistent with the preferences of Secretary Lew and the Mint’s Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee, the Commission recommended obverse alternative #1-A and reverse alternative #5. For the proposed image of the Main Hall at Ellis Island on the recommended reverse, they noted that the glass canopy depicted in the foreground may be modern construction, potentially conflicting with the intended reference to Ellis Island as experienced by Mr. Lew’s family; accordingly, they recommended further study and possible revision of this depiction for historical accuracy.

As always, the staff is available to assist you with future submissions.

Sincerely,

/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
