As part of the National Park Service initiative to restore the Mall greensward, many alternative designs were developed in 2012 to reconstruct the central lawn panels while providing dedicated paved areas to accommodate events; the first phase from 4th to 7th Streets was completed in 2013, with the remainder completed in 2016. The CFA most recently reviewed the project in March 2013.
