Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial

View of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial from the Tidal Basin as built in 2012. The central concept of the design by ROMA Design Group with McKissack & McKissack presented an image of the slain civil rights leader as emerging from the “Stone of Hope,” in opposition to the “Mountain of Despair” flanked by dark gray inscription walls. The colossal statue of King by sculptor Lei Yi Xin was completed in 2011 and is visible through the cherry trees. The CFA most recently reviewed the project in January 2013.
